Why does spit-up happen so long after feeding?

The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) — the valve between the stomach and esophagus — is immature in infants and doesn’t close tightly. When baby is upright, gravity keeps stomach contents down. But when they’re laid flat, put on their tummy, or compressed in a car seat, pressure builds against that weak valve and partially digested milk returns.
