✈️ Travel · US Re-Entry

You’re on the plane. Form 6059B has 21 questions. Olive oil counts. Olives don’t. Fresh fruit = seized. Wrong answer = $10,000 fine.

AI takes your shopping list + country visited and fills CBP Form 6059B with exactly-right language. Decodes ‘commercial merchandise,’ ‘agricultural products,’ ‘currency instruments.’ Calculates duty on items over $800 exemption. Flags prohibited items before you get to the counter. Declaring correctly = 3% duty. Hiding = seizure + fine + marked traveler forever.

The Problem

The flight attendant hands you Form 6059B. Olive oil = agricultural YES. Olives in a jar = agricultural NO. Fresh pear = seized always.

The 21 questions on Form 6059B use legal language — terms like ‘commercial merchandise’ and ‘agricultural products’ have specific meanings you’d never guess

‘Are you bringing fruits, vegetables, plants, seeds, food, insects?’ seems straightforward. But olive oil is YES, packaged chocolate is YES, seeds in spice packets are YES. ‘Commercial merchandise?’ means items for resale — but what if your friend asked you to grab them something and you’re getting reimbursed? Technically YES. The form’s language is legal, not practical, and most travelers guess wrong. Wrong guesses can trigger inspection, seizure, fines up to $10,000.

💰

You bought $1,800 of Italian leather goods and didn’t know the $800 duty-free limit — now facing surprise charges or temptation to hide items

Each US resident gets $800 duty-free exemption (for 48+ hour trips). Over that: 3% duty on next $1,000, higher rates after. Families can COMBINE — family of 4 = $3,200 combined. But most travelers don’t know this. They either: 1) Pay unexpected duty at counter and feel ambushed. 2) Worse, try to hide items (declare less) — which CBP officers are trained to catch, leading to seizure + fine that dwarfs the duty they were avoiding.

🧀

You brought back an artisanal cheese from France — and didn’t know unpasteurized cheese from EU is largely prohibited

Country-specific rules catch travelers constantly. Unpasteurized (raw milk) cheese from most EU countries: largely prohibited. Cured meats from certain countries: prohibited due to animal disease concerns. Japanese over-the-counter medications containing pseudoephedrine: specifically restricted. Cuban products: rules have shifted multiple times. Travelers bring items back thinking ‘it’s just food/medicine’ and find items seized at customs. Knowing the rules PER COUNTRY before returning is essential.

🚫

You hid a $400 watch thinking ‘they’ll never check’ — officer found it, $400 fine plus your Global Entry is gone

The single worst customs mistake: hiding items to avoid declaration. CBP officers are specifically trained to spot hidden items in luggage, pockets, worn-under-clothing. When caught: 1) Item seized. 2) Fine equal to or greater than item value. 3) Global Entry revoked if member ($100 lost + all future trips painful). 4) Marked as ‘frequent inspection’ on future trips — every re-entry becomes lengthy. The $12 duty on that watch was cheap compared to the consequences. Always declare.

List shopping + country — AI fills every form answer

Italian trip, couple, $1,600 leather goods, 2 bottles wine, olive oil, packaged pasta: Question 1 (agriculture): YES (olive oil + pasta). Question 6 (commercial): NO. Question 7 (value): $1,600. Combined exemption: $1,600 (family of 2). Exactly at limit, no duty owed. Clear form, clear path.

Calculate duty for items over exemption

Family of 3, trip to Japan, $3,000 electronics + gifts: Combined exemption $2,400. Over by $600. First $1,000 over = 3% = $18. Electronics standard 3% rate. Total duty estimate: $18. Bring $20 in cash for easy payment at counter. No surprises, no panic.

Pass customs confidently — right line + truthful answers

US citizen? Use Mobile Passport Control App (free, download before trip, fill declaration on phone, skip regular line). Have Global Entry? Kiosk entry, 2-minute process. Otherwise: regular line 20-60 min. Answer officer truthfully: purpose, duration, items, over/under limit. Keep calm, declare everything.

⏱ 2-60 min at airport

Customs cleared — no fines, no seizures, no surprise charges— the form filled accurately with all 21 questions answered per YOUR situation, the duty calculated correctly before you reach the counter, the prohibited items identified and left behind or repacked, the right re-entry method chosen (Mobile Passport saves 40 minutes for free), and the officer interaction calm and brief because everything matches. Not another traveler panicking at the form on the plane or hiding items and regretting it later. Just passed through correctly.

Questions

Everything you need to know.

What’s the duty-free limit for returning US residents?

$800 per person for trips of 48+ hours (not visited in last 30 days). $200 per person for shorter trips or repeat visits within 30 days. $1,600 per person from US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, or Guam. Family members CAN combine exemptions on a single declaration — a family of 4 returning from Europe together has $3,200 combined duty-free. Items over the exemption: 3% flat duty on the next $1,000, then higher product-specific rates. Example: $1,200 shopping − $800 exemption = $400 over. Duty = $12. Example: $5,000 shopping (couple, $1,600 combined exemption) = $3,400 over. First $1,000 at 3% = $30. Remaining $2,400 at higher rates (typically 3-15% depending on product). Alcohol: 1 liter per person age 21+ duty-free. Tobacco: 200 cigarettes + 100 cigars per person 21+ duty-free. Always declare everything — duty on declared items is far cheaper than fines on hidden items.

What items are prohibited from bringing into the US?

Common prohibited items: 1) FRESH FRUITS and vegetables — almost all prohibited due to agricultural disease concerns. Don’t bring ANY fresh produce. 2) RAW MILK CHEESES from most countries — particularly problematic from EU. Hard aged cheeses usually OK, soft young cheeses often prohibited. 3) CERTAIN MEATS — depends on country. Beef from certain EU countries prohibited. Pork products from various countries restricted. 4) CUBAN PRODUCTS — rules have shifted, personal quantities currently allowed but subject to change. 5) COUNTERFEIT GOODS — knockoff designer bags, watches, clothing seized and fines assessed. 6) IVORY, CORAL, endangered species products — always prohibited. 7) CERTAIN MEDICATIONS — over-the-counter medications from some countries (Japanese pseudoephedrine products, for example) restricted. 8) ABSINTHE — some formulations allowed, others not. When in doubt: declare to officer, let them decide. Declaring a prohibited item means it’s confiscated (bad) but not fined (much worse). Hiding a prohibited item means confiscation + fine + potential criminal charges.

Should I use Global Entry, Mobile Passport Control, or the regular line?

Depends on frequency of international travel. GLOBAL ENTRY ($100 for 5 years, application + interview required): fastest option — kiosk entry, no form, typically 2-5 minutes. Worth it if you do 2+ international trips per year. Also includes TSA PreCheck for domestic flights. Apply 4-6 months before next trip (interview backlog is real). MOBILE PASSPORT CONTROL APP (FREE): US citizens only. Download app, fill declaration on phone before landing, skip regular line via MPC lane. Available at 80+ major airports. The best free option — saves 40+ minutes vs regular line. REGULAR LINE: paper Form 6059B + passport + officer interview. 20-60 minute wait typical at major airports after international flights. For occasional travelers (1 trip per year) who prefer not to register: acceptable, just arrive with form already filled out. RECOMMENDATION: Mobile Passport app as minimum for any US citizen. Global Entry if you travel internationally 2+ times yearly — pays for itself in time saved.

What if I made a mistake on the form after submitting it?

Tell the officer immediately, don’t wait for them to discover it. The CBP operates on an ‘intent’ standard — honest mistakes corrected voluntarily are treated very differently from discovered concealment. If you realize you forgot to declare a $300 watch while speaking with officer: ‘I realized I didn’t list my new watch on the form’ = officer adds it, you pay the 3% duty on the amount over exemption, friendly interaction. If officer finds the $300 watch hidden in your luggage unmentioned: seizure + fine up to value of item + marked for future inspection + possible Global Entry revocation. The difference is ‘voluntary correction’ vs ‘discovered violation.’ Similarly, if you realize at any point during customs processing that you made an error: speak up. Officers would rather process honest corrections than catch dishonesty — and the consequences to you are dramatically different. The form at the top says you are making the declaration ‘under penalty of perjury’ — this is not hyperbole.

Do I really need to declare every item I bought or received?

Yes — and the standard is broader than most travelers assume. You must declare: 1) Everything you purchased abroad that’s coming back with you (including small souvenirs). 2) Gifts you received abroad. 3) Items you bought for others. 4) Items you’re bringing back for others (even at cost). 5) Samples you received for free (promotional items, swag bags). 6) Items given to you for any reason. You don’t need to declare: 1) Clothes/personal items you took with you and are bringing back (same items you left with). 2) Items purchased duty-free at US airport on departure (already taxed). 3) Items US-origin (manufactured in US) — but be ready to prove origin. The $800 exemption covers the VALUE of what you declare, not the number of items. Declaring a $20 scarf costs nothing (under exemption). Declaring a $1,200 watch costs $12 in duty (3% of $400 over exemption, if using full exemption). Declaring always costs less than the consequences of hiding. When in doubt, declare — let the officer decide how it’s treated. There is no penalty for over-declaration.
