The Problem

You’re shopping in Europe and the math is impossible to do in your head. Is the $350 sweater the thing that puts you over? Or does the wine count separately?

🧮

You’re shopping in euros while thinking in dollars — and your mental math is off by 5-20% depending on current exchange rates

€100 ≈ $107-115 depending on the day. €450 leather bag ≈ $485-520 depending on rate. Without real-time currency tracking while shopping, you lose track. ‘I think I’ve spent around $600’ — actually $720. ‘I’ve still got room’ — actually you’re 10% over limit. Currency blindness causes 30-40% of duty surprises. A running USD total updated per-purchase eliminates this guessing.

👨‍👩‍👧

Family of 4 has $3,200 combined exemption — but you’re buying everything under ‘mom’s account’ and hitting her limit in 2 stores

The $800 per person rule lets families legitimately combine exemptions — children count too. But families who don’t know this put everything on one person’s allocation and hit limit fast. Smart allocation: distribute items across family members’ exemptions (the kid’s exemption can cover souvenirs and clothing for them, legitimately). A family of 4 with proper allocation can bring $3,200 duty-free. Without allocation strategy: $800 total, then duty on the rest.

🍷

You’re packing a third bottle of wine — not realizing only 1 LITER per person age 21+ is ‘duty-free’ and beyond that there’s separate alcohol duty + state excise

Alcohol and tobacco have SEPARATE caps that don’t use your $800 general exemption. 1 liter of wine/spirits per person age 21+ duty-free. 200 cigarettes + 100 cigars per person 21+. Beyond that: small federal duty ($1-3/liter wine, higher for spirits) + state excise (some states charge $5+/liter). Children don’t get alcohol allotment. So ‘4 bottles of wine for family of 4’ = only 2 adults × 1 liter = 2 liters duty-free. Third+ bottles trigger duty. Planning before buying avoids surprise.

🛍️

You bought at the airport ‘duty-free’ shop thinking it’s exempt from US customs — it’s not, it still counts toward your $800

Airport ‘duty-free’ means the seller didn’t charge the LOCAL country’s sales tax. It has nothing to do with US customs duty. Items bought at airport duty-free shops still count toward your US $800 exemption and must be declared. Many travelers believe airport duty-free = free from all customs — they arrive in US with 3 bottles of wine and find they owe duty + face alcohol cap issues. Understanding this distinction prevents re-entry surprises.

How It Works

From ‘am I over?’ panic to ‘$1,840 total, family of 3 allocated, $50 duty ready.’

1

Enter travelers + what you’re buying — AI runs the math live

Couple in Paris, bought so far: €450 bag + €200 shoes + €90 belt = €740 ≈ $800 USD. Wife’s bag (€450 = $485) uses half her exemption. Husband’s shoes + belt ($315) well within his $800. Combined: at ~$800 of $1,600 exemption. Safe for another $800 in purchases. CLEAR to buy more.

⏱ Per shop, ~30 sec

2

Optimize family allocation + know separate caps

Family of 4 in Italy: Mom’s leather bag $450. Dad’s jacket $380. Kid 1’s clothes $150. Kid 2’s clothes $180. Total $1,160. Combined exemption $3,200. WELL under. Plus 2 bottles wine (2 × 1L = at adult alcohol cap). Olive oil + pasta (commercial food, declare but no duty). All fits, just declare everything.

3

Over exemption? Decide: pay duty, ship separately, or skip

Solo traveler in Tokyo, $3,800 watch considered: Exemption $800. Over $3,000. Duty: $30 (first $1,000 at 3%) + $2,000 × 13.5% = $300 total duty. Watch still cheaper than US retail by $800? Worth it, pay duty. Or ship via FedEx: similar duty + shipping cost + no lost-luggage risk. Decide with numbers.

⏱ 2 min calc

Shopping done with math — no surprises at customs— the running total tracked in USD as you shop, the family exemption combined properly across all members, the separate caps for alcohol and tobacco understood, the product-specific rates known for items over limit, and the ship-vs-carry decision made based on actual numbers. Not another traveler guessing and ending up with an unexpected $400 duty bill, or — worse — hiding items and risking seizure. Smart allocation, clear decisions, zero surprises.

$800 × familycombined legitimately — $3,200 for family of 4 is real, not a trick 1 liter alcoholSEPARATE cap per person 21+. Children don’t count — 2 adults = 2 liters Airport duty-freefree from LOCAL tax only. Still counts toward US $800 exemption
Questions

Everything you need to know.

How much is the US duty-free exemption and how does family combining work?

$800 per US resident for trips of 48+ hours (not visited in last 30 days). $200 per person for shorter trips or repeat visits. $1,600 per person from US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, or Guam. Family members CAN legitimately combine on a single declaration — a family of 4 has $3,200 combined duty-free. Family includes spouse and dependent children under 21. The combining is real, not a loophole — CBP rules specifically allow it. Allocation strategy: distribute items so no single person’s exemption is heavily used before others are. A child’s $800 exemption legitimately covers items the family brought for them (clothes, souvenirs, gifts). Over the exemption: first $1,000 over = flat 3% duty, beyond that = product-specific rates. Example: $1,500 shopping with family of 2 ($1,600 exemption) = under limit, no duty. $3,000 shopping with same family = $1,400 over, duty approximately $30 + small amount on remaining $400. Always declare total shopping amount — family combining is handled at declaration time.

Do alcohol and tobacco count toward my $800 exemption?

No — alcohol and tobacco have SEPARATE caps, not counted against the $800 general exemption. ALCOHOL: 1 liter (33.8 oz) per person age 21+ is duty-free. Beyond 1 liter: federal duty $1-3 per liter on wine, higher on spirits + state excise tax (varies by state, California charges $0.20/gallon wine, New York higher). TOBACCO: 200 cigarettes + 100 cigars per person age 21+. Cuban cigars allowed in personal quantities for personal use. Beyond cap: federal duty + excise tax. Children don’t get alcohol/tobacco allotments — they count as 0 for these caps, but DO count for the general $800 exemption. Family of 4 with 2 adults and 2 kids: general $3,200 exemption + alcohol 2 liters duty-free (only adults) + tobacco 400 cigarettes duty-free (only adults). Packaged food, olive oil, chocolate, coffee, tea: generally duty-free in personal quantities (declare them anyway). Fresh fruit: PROHIBITED, not about duty — just don’t bring.

What’s the difference between airport duty-free and US customs duty?

These are two completely different things that sound similar. AIRPORT ‘DUTY-FREE’ SHOPS: sell items without local country’s sales tax/VAT. A ‘duty-free’ perfume in Paris airport costs the pre-tax price (saves ~20% vs regular Paris retail). This has NOTHING to do with US customs duty. US CUSTOMS DUTY: tax YOU pay on return to US for items valued over your $800 exemption. Applies to ANY items regardless of where purchased — airport duty-free, regular stores, markets, gifts received, etc. All count toward your $800 exemption and must be declared. MISUNDERSTANDING: many travelers think ‘I bought it at the duty-free shop, so no US duty applies.’ Wrong. A $500 bottle of perfume from airport duty-free still goes toward your $800 US exemption. If you’re already at $800 from other purchases, that $500 bottle puts you $500 over and you owe duty. The ONLY way to avoid US customs consideration: don’t exceed your $800 exemption in total, regardless of purchase location. Airport duty-free can save on LOCAL tax, not US duty.

Should I ship high-value purchases separately rather than carry them back?

Depends on item value and risk tolerance. CARRY vs SHIP analysis: CARRYING back advantages: immediate use, no shipping cost, duty paid at port of entry (straightforward). SHIPPING advantages: no lost-luggage risk (critical for items $3,000+), carrier handles customs paperwork, distributes costs (you pay duty via FedEx/UPS separately), can be stored by courier if you’re not home. Disadvantages: shipping cost $50-200, 3-14 day wait, potential customs delays. DECISION FRAMEWORK: Under $800 total? Carry — no duty, no reason to ship. $800-3,000 total? Usually carry — small duty of $30-100 is straightforward. $3,000+ single item? Consider shipping — insurance on carrier shipping often cheaper than travel insurance coverage, and eliminates lost-luggage risk. Luxury jewelry or watch $5,000+? Shipping usually wiser — theft risk in checked luggage is real, and dedicated shipping insurance typically covers full value. SHIPPED GIFTS: items under $100 per recipient per day are duty-free when shipped (not hand-carried). Different rules apply. Document everything shipped — keep tracking numbers and customs paperwork.

What happens if I’m over the exemption limit?

Simply declare the total and pay the duty. It’s less painful than most travelers fear. DUTY CALCULATION: first $1,000 over exemption = flat 3% (the ‘de minimis’ simplified rate). Beyond that = product-specific rates (3-15% depending on item type). EXAMPLES: $1,500 purchase − $800 exemption = $700 over = $21 duty ($0.21/dollar over × 700). $2,500 purchase − $800 = $1,700 over = $30 (first $1,000 at 3%) + $700 at product rate (say 5%) = $65 total. $10,000 purchase − $1,600 family exemption = $8,400 over = $30 + $7,400 × product rate (6-10% typical for luxury) = $444-740 total. Not nothing, but usually affordable on a $10,000 shopping trip. PAYMENT: at port of entry. Credit card accepted. Process is fast — officer calculates, you pay, you leave. Getting caught NOT declaring: items seized (100% loss) + fine up to value of item + marked for future inspection. The math always favors declaring honestly. Even $500 in duty is better than losing $5,000 in items plus paying fine. Tell the officer: ‘I’m over my exemption. Here are my receipts.’ They appreciate cooperation and process efficiently.
