When does ETIAS actually launch?

ETIAS launches in the last quarter of 2026 (October-December 2026). The European Commission has confirmed this timeline, though the exact date within Q4 hasn’t been announced yet. Several important context points: 1) The Entry/Exit System (EES) launched October 2025 and will be fully operational April 2026 — EES is the prerequisite system ETIAS depends on. 2) The application portal at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias is expected to open several months before mandatory enforcement. 3) After launch, there will be a 6-month transitional period where travelers without ETIAS can still enter Europe. 4) Then an additional 6-month grace period for first-time travelers only. 5) Full enforcement begins approximately 12 months after official launch.
