The room is $149 per night on the website — but the bill at checkout is $212 because of the resort fee, parking, taxes, and the wifi charge they mentioned in paragraph 47 of the fine print.

Enter the hotel name and city — AI decodes every hidden fee before you book: resort fee, destination fee, parking, wifi, minibar traps. See the TRUE total price. Compare hotels honestly. Book the real cheapest option, not the best-marketed one.

The Problem

You compared 5 hotels by nightly rate and picked the cheapest — but the cheapest rate had the biggest hidden fees, and the ‘expensive’ hotel with no resort fee was actually $40/night less.

😰

You booked a $149/night room in Las Vegas and at checkout the bill showed a $45/night ‘resort fee’ — adding $225 to a 5-night stay that you didn’t budget for and nobody mentioned at booking

Resort fees are the hotel industry’s most profitable hidden charge. They add $25–$55 per night for ‘amenities’ — pool access, gym, wifi — that most guests assume are included in a $149 room. The fee is mandatory. You can’t opt out. And most booking platforms show the rate BEFORE the resort fee in search results, making the hotel appear cheaper than competitors who include everything in the room rate. A 5-night stay with a $45 resort fee costs $225 more than advertised — enough to change which hotel was actually the best deal.

💸

You drove to the hotel and discovered parking is $45/night for self-park and $65/night for valet — adding $315 to a week-long stay because you didn’t check parking costs before booking a hotel downtown

Hotel parking fees are the second-largest surprise charge after resort fees — and they’re rarely visible during booking. Downtown and resort hotels commonly charge $30–$65 per night for parking. A week-long stay can add $200–$450 to the total bill. The fee varies enormously: some hotels include parking, some charge $15, some charge $60. Checking before booking takes 30 seconds and can shift the real cost comparison entirely. A suburban hotel with free parking may be cheaper total than a downtown hotel with a lower room rate.

😵

The minibar charged your card $8 for a bottle of water you moved to make room for your own drinks — because the minibar has motion sensors that auto-charge when items are shifted, even if you put them back

Modern hotel minibars use weight sensors or infrared motion detectors that trigger charges when items are moved — not consumed. Picking up a $12 snack to look at it, then putting it back, can generate a charge on your folio. Guests discover these phantom charges at checkout or on their credit card statement days later. The defense: don’t touch anything in the minibar unless you intend to buy it. Or better: call the front desk and ask them to empty and disable the minibar at check-in.

🤷

You chose Hotel A at $149 over Hotel B at $179 — but Hotel B had no resort fee, free parking, and free wifi, making its true nightly cost $179 vs. Hotel A’s true cost of $209

The booking site’s sort-by-price puts Hotel A first because it shows the lower room rate. But Hotel A adds a $40 resort fee and $20 parking. Hotel B’s higher sticker price includes everything. The true comparison: Hotel A = $209/night. Hotel B = $179/night. The ‘expensive’ hotel saves $30/night — $210 on a week-long stay. This pricing distortion is intentional: unbundled pricing wins in search results even though the total cost is higher. The toolkit reveals the true total so you compare honestly.

Questions

Everything you need to know.

What is a resort fee?

A resort fee (also called ‘destination fee,’ ‘amenity fee,’ or ‘facility fee’) is a mandatory per-night charge added to your room rate — typically $25–$55/night. It supposedly covers pool access, gym, wifi, local phone calls, and other amenities most guests assume are included in the room rate. You cannot opt out even if you don’t use any of these amenities. The fee is not included in the advertised rate on most booking sites, making the hotel appear cheaper than it actually is.

Can I refuse to pay a resort fee?

Generally, no — it’s a mandatory charge disclosed in the booking terms (usually in fine print). However: some guests have successfully disputed resort fees with their credit card company when the fee was not clearly disclosed during booking. Elite loyalty members at some hotel chains can get the fee waived. The FTC has been increasingly scrutinizing ‘junk fees’ in the hotel industry, and new transparency rules may require hotels to include resort fees in the advertised rate. The toolkit tracks which chains have changed their policies.

Do all hotels charge hidden fees?

No — many hotels include everything in the room rate with no additional mandatory fees. Budget chains (Hampton, Holiday Inn Express) rarely charge resort fees. Luxury chains vary: some include everything, some add $50+ resort fees. Las Vegas, Hawaii, Florida resort areas, and major cities like New York are the worst offenders. The toolkit identifies whether YOUR specific hotel has hidden fees — because even within the same chain, policies vary by property.

Is it cheaper to book direct or through an OTA?

It depends on the hotel and the OTA. Booking direct sometimes shows the resort fee more clearly, and some hotels offer ‘best rate guarantees’ that match or beat OTA prices while adding loyalty points. However, some OTAs negotiate bulk rates that are genuinely lower even after fees. The toolkit compares the total cost across platforms for YOUR hotel. The general rule: check both, add ALL fees for each option, then compare. The sticker price comparison is meaningless without the fees.

What about the new FTC rules on hidden fees?

The FTC has been pushing for mandatory all-in pricing in hotels, similar to how airlines now must show total price including baggage fees. As of the toolkit’s last update, some rules require clearer disclosure of mandatory fees at the time of booking, but enforcement varies. Some hotel chains have proactively moved to all-in pricing (including resort fees in the room rate). The toolkit notes which chains have adopted transparent pricing and which still use the unbundled model.
