The Problem

You booked the flight and the hotel — but forgot to check if you need a yellow fever vaccine to enter the country

😰

Some countries won’t let you in without specific vaccines — and you find out at the border, not at booking

Yellow fever vaccination is REQUIRED for entry to dozens of countries. Some require proof of polio, meningitis, or COVID vaccination. There’s no warning at checkout. The airline doesn’t check. You find out when immigration asks for your vaccination card and you don’t have one. The flight home is at your expense.

💸

Your health insurance covers zero medical costs in most foreign countries — and a hospital visit abroad averages $10,000–$50,000

Most US health insurance plans don’t cover international care. Medicare covers nothing outside the US. If you break a leg in Rome or get dengue in Bali, you’re paying cash — and foreign hospital rates for tourists aren’t cheap. Medical evacuation alone averages $50,000–$100,000. Travel insurance covering all of this costs $30–$80 for a 2-week trip.

😵

You packed Advil and sunscreen but not the malaria prophylaxis, altitude pills, or water purification tablets you actually needed

Your medical kit is band-aids and antacids. But your destination has malaria-carrying mosquitoes, water you can’t drink, and altitude that causes sickness above 8,000 feet. The things that actually make you sick abroad aren’t headaches — they’re parasites, contaminated water, and diseases your body has never encountered.

🤷

Your regular doctor says ‘have a good trip’ — because they’re not a travel medicine specialist and have 7 minutes per visit

You asked your doctor about travel prep. They said ‘make sure your tetanus is current.’ That’s it. They didn’t mention hepatitis A (the most common vaccine-preventable travel disease), typhoid risk from street food, or Japanese encephalitis if you’re visiting rural Asia. Travel medicine is a specialty — your GP doesn’t have the time or training to cover it all.

Questions

Everything you need to know

How far in advance do I need to get travel vaccines?

Ideally 6 weeks before departure. Some vaccines need multiple doses (hepatitis B requires 3 doses over 6 months for full protection, though an accelerated schedule exists). Others like yellow fever need 10 days to become effective. Typhoid and hepatitis A need 2 weeks. If your trip is sooner, a travel clinic can still help — some protection is better than none, and many single-dose vaccines work within days.

Does my US health insurance work abroad?

Most employer plans and ACA marketplace plans provide very limited or zero international coverage. Medicare covers nothing outside the US. Some PPO plans offer emergency coverage abroad but with high out-of-pocket costs and complicated reimbursement. The guide checks your insurance type and recommends a specific travel insurance plan: look for medical coverage ($100K+), evacuation coverage ($250K+), and trip cancellation. Typical cost: $30–$80 for a 2-week trip.

What should I pack in a travel medical kit?

Beyond basic first aid, the kit is destination-specific. Southeast Asia: anti-diarrheal, water purification tablets, mosquito repellent with DEET, permethrin for clothing. High altitude (Peru, Nepal): acetazolamide for altitude sickness. Sub-Saharan Africa: malaria prophylaxis prescribed by your doctor. Everywhere: your regular medications (enough for the trip plus 7 extra days), copies of prescriptions, antihistamines, rehydration salts, and a thermometer.

Can I drink the tap water in [destination]?

The Destination Safety Check answers this for any specific country or city. General rule: tap water is safe in most of Western Europe, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore. It’s unsafe in most of Central/South America, Africa, South/Southeast Asia, and parts of Eastern Europe. When in doubt: drink bottled water (check the seal), avoid ice in drinks, and use bottled water for brushing teeth. The guide gives you the specific answer for YOUR destination.

What if I get sick AFTER I come home?

The Post-Travel Health Check covers exactly this. Some diseases have incubation periods of weeks or months: malaria symptoms can appear 1–4 weeks after return, parasitic infections can take weeks, and dengue fever symptoms start 4–10 days after a bite. If you feel unwell within 3 months of returning from a tropical destination, tell your doctor WHERE you traveled — the destination determines which tests to run. The guide maps symptom timelines for your specific destination.
